At the heart of English folk

Schools and colleges

The English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) runs high quality, creative projects and workshops for children and young people throughout the education sector.

"Our children got so much out of learning about their locality - it brought our community closer together, which is not always easy, and it was an affirming experience for all of us."

Primary Teacher, Lincolnshire

We had students take part we wouldn't have expected to get themselves involved. It also tied in nicely to our curriculum - Year 7 and 8 have both covered World folk music this year. It was also excellent for students to experience music from their heritage/culture.

Secondary Music Teacher, Essex

Working with schools, colleges, universities and youth organisations, we provide exciting opportunities for all age groups to engage with folk music, dance and song and learn about our dynamic, living, folk heritage.

Our projects are led by professional folk artists who are skilled and committed educators.

We offer bespoke creative learning projects for individual primary, secondary and SEN/D schools - at all key stages from Early Years to Key Stage 5.

Popular topics:

  • Folk song: singing, arranging, creative song-writing and performance
  • Ceilidh band: learning folk tunes by ear, arranging and playing for dancing
  • Dance - English country / ceilidh, morris, sword, step / clog, maypole

Our award-winning Resource Bank contains hundreds of freely downloadable resources to help educators bring folk arts to life in the classroom. Explore it here.

Our workshops and projects can support the school curriculum, particularly:

We partner with music education hubs, museums and other organisations to deliver regional and national schools projects.

We deliver professional development and INSET sessions for educators, often in partnership with other organisations.

We are an Artsmark Partner and our work can support schools with achieving or maintaining this award.

We are an Arts Award Supporter - read here about our Arts Award offer.
